Greek Dynamic Names – Expansion and Fixes
What this mod does:
- Expands the list of dynamic location and province names for the Greek language to include the entirety of the Balkans, Anatolia, Italy, Armenia, Georgia, the Levant, and Egypt, as well as most of North Africa, Mesopotamia, and parts of western Europe.
- Fixes numerous anachronisms and locational inaccuracies found in vanilla.
- Follows a consistent romanization/transliteration style designed to respect both 14th century Greek pronunciation and the nuances of Greek orthography. As of version 1.1 (July 18th, 2026), this mod’s transliteration format has been overhauled to bring it closer to the vanilla style while also incorporating elements from traditional Greek polytonic orthography.
- Note: as of this update, letters with macrons (used to represent omega and eta) cannot be used with accent marks without appearing broken on the map (but not in menus) so macrons have been omitted in those cases (e.g. ṓ becomes ó, ī́ becomes í).
- Utilizes Greek primary sources and high-quality, academic secondary sources to ensure accuracy and avoid anachronistic toponyms (too ancient or too modern) wherever possible.
- A full list of dynamic names (including for other languages), notes, and sources found here.[docs.google.com]
Future plans:
- Finish North Africa, France, and the Iberian Peninsula.
- (Separate mod) Homogenize the spelling of Greek words/names across locations, character names, user interface, etc.
- (Separate mods) Make similar mods for dynamic names of other languages, i.e. Turkish, Italian, Bulgarian, etc.
FAQ:
- Q: Why is there V where I expect B?
- A: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betacism#Greek
- Q: If Beta makes a V sound, why are there sometimes Bs?
- A: Bs in this mod represent the μπ digraph, which is frequently used to represent that sound in modern Greek and was sometimes used for that purpose in medieval Greek, particularly in foreign words.
- Q: Why is there Ī where I expect E/Ē?
- A: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iotacism
- Q: Why did you change F to Ph, and why is there sometimes still F instead of Ph?
- A: The letter Phi has made an F sound since late antiquity as opposed to the aspirated P sound which it had previously made, but I’ve decided to change the the transliteration from F to Ph to be a bit closer to Paradox’s transliteration, and because most Westerners pronounce Ph as F anyway. However, I transliterated it as F in a few (mostly Latin-based) toponyms for recognizability.
- Q: Why is there Tz where I expect Ts?
- A: Τσ (Ts) as a digraph was not generally used in the Medieval period, and Τζ (Tz) was used in the contexts in which Τσ is typically used today. Compare medieval Τζιμισκής with modern Τσιμισκής.
Permissions:
- While I doubt I hold any rights to the contents of this mod anyway, for the sake of clarity, anyone who wants to use any the location names included in this mod are free to do so, including modders or Paradox developers.
This mod should be compatible with anything that doesn’t also edit Greek dynamic names.
Sadly, this mod along with any other localization mods seem to disable achievements.
