Euromod – Modern British Navy
Following the end of the Cold War the Royal Navy experienced a steady downscaling and cancellation of upcoming projects due to shifting operational requirements in the new strategic environment of the 21st century.
While new and advanced classes of ships such as the Type 45 destroyers and Astute class SSNs would be comissioned through the 2000s the overall fleet size would stay on a course of gradual decline, leading to a period of controversy around the capabilities of the once mighty Royal Navy to fight an actual major conflict in the modern era.
Since the 2020s the navy has therefore taken small steps to rebuild its fighting capacity in the face of growing geopolitical tensions and increasing responsibility within NATO.
