Description:
1444 (EU4) Start Date – In Development (Major Release – 0.4.3.6)
"11 November 1444 – the day after the crushing defeat of the Poles and Hungarians by the Ottoman Turks at the Battle of Varna, and the death of King Władysław III of Poland, ending the Crusade of Varna. This left the Albanian armies under the capable general Skanderbeg to fend off the Ottoman armies alone, which they would do for the next 24 years…" – Rise of the Ottomans Bookmark, Europa Universalis IV

Introduction

Miss the nostalgic EU4 start? Want to get into the action of the Ages of Discovery and Refomation sooner? We do too!

This mod aims to bring the legendary start date of 11 November 1444 from EU4 to EU5 in a Vanilla+, more historically accurate experience than the base-game through changing the map, tags, rulers, dynasties, pops, cultures and more!

Please note this mod is in ACTIVE DEVELOPMENT, and as a result, many details may be inaccurate or a WIP. If you know how to mod EU5, or are an expert regarding this time period, please consider joining us!

Current Features
  • A complete map change to reflect the realities of the world as it was at 1444!
  • Globally redone pop numbers for each region to be 1444 appropriate, in line with multiple academic sources.
  • Hundreds of historical characters across the world, with more being added every update!
  • New tags, dynasties and flags.
  • New government reforms.
  • New IOs! (e.g. League of Lezhe, Frisian Freedom, Japanese Clans!)
  • More flavor! (e.g. Mandate Crisis Disaster for Ming)
  • A (still in progress) tech rebalance to allow you to experience the Age of Renaissance and Discovery sooner!

Future Plans
  • Further refinements to the map based on community input.
  • All historical rulers, ruler histories and family trees relevant to 1444 fully complete.
  • New cultures and formable tags.
  • New situations (e.g. Burgundian Inheritance, Rise of the Mughals, State of the Kalmar Union etc.)
  • New advances, techs, events, IOs and flavor!

FAQ
  • Help! I’ve downloaded the mod and enabled it, but it isn’t showing up in-game!

This is a common error with basically every PDX game and the Steam Workshop. Unsubscribing from the mod, rebooting Steam and resubscribing will fix this.

  • A detail about a country/character/pop etc. is inaccurate, can you please fix it?

Sure! The best place to contact us to make a suggestion on our Discord, as we may miss this in the Steam comments. Please provide a historical source so that we may verify that this is accurate.

  • When is the next update?

It’s coming soon! You can join our Discord to take a look at the current progress we’ve shared, or chat to us about how it’s going!

  • Why do certain AI countries blob or act really passive?

This is predominantly a vanilla issue, one we are hoping that PDX will address rather than us. We may weigh or railroad certain aspects of a tag’s expansion if we believe they are dying too quickly or considerably expanding ahistorically to a detrimental degree.

  • When will you reach a 1.0 build?

Our goal is to get almost every 1444 character alive and represented on the map, as well adding 1444-focused flavour for some key players at this time. Then we’ll consider it fairly complete! This doesn’t mean we will stop working on it though.
