The Thirty Years War Revamped [War of Religions +]
This mod has two primary features: to improve the logic and spread of the Reformation without being annoying to the player, and to make the War of Religions carry the same lethal impact that the real Thirty Years War did. The Wars of Religion should now be a defining, horrific midpoint of your campaign, and if you are not careful and do not protect your borders, your nation can be utterly economically ruined.
– It has a 10% chance to begin each month, starting in 1600
– Every three years, the Protestant and Catholic Leagues will automatically go to war (overriding truces)
– The war is now split into a series of individual conflicts, much like the Hundred Years War
– There can be a maximum of five individual conflicts before a mandatory Peace of Westphalia
– After three conflicts, the leader of the losing side will be prompted to offer a premature Peace of Westphalia to the other League
– Enforcing the peace treaty League War Phase Victory will grant your respective side 1 Strategic Victory
– The first side to reach 3 Strategic Victories will win the Thirty Years War!
Complete GUI Integration: Important scripted variables can be viewed in the situation tab, and the existing GUI has been altered to fit with this mod’s new take on the Thirty Years War
A Difficult War: It is now much, much, much more difficult to win the Thirty Years War. You must win 3/5 individual conflicts, and it is entirely possible for these conflicts to end in White Peace, potentially guaranteeing a stalemate. Total victory should now be the less likely outcome.
Reformation Enhancement: Starting in 1530, all AI Catholic nations with a capital in the Northern Germany region (who are not the vassals of Catholic nations) will rapidly convert to Lutheranism. The AI of certain countries (Austria, France, Bohemia, Poland) have been tweaked to prevent them from ever embracing Protestantism willingly. AI England will convert to Lutheranism by 1560 if the Anglicanism event does not fire. 33% of all Catholic pops in a country will automatically be converted to Protestantism when the nation flips state religion. The rate of conversion of Lutheran/Calvinist Preachers has not been changed, so staying Catholic should remain 100% feasible, but embracing the reformation should now also be just as feasible.
Multi-Phase War: The War of Religions will now last anywhere from 25-50 years, depending on how the two sides match up.
Gradual Escalation: The loser of the first individual conflict will reach out to the strongest Catholic power in Europe and invite them to their League. The loser of the second will reach out to the second strongest Catholic power. By the third conflict, Sweden or Denmark can intervene. By the fourth, any Christian nation in Europe can intervene.
Mass Devastation: HRE Locations occupied by armies during the Thirty Years War will receive a series of escalating modifiers and lose 20-60% of their population. Every month while the War is active, a random location in the HRE suffers 5% population loss. Every month, a random nation in the HRE will suffer an event reflecting the mass suffering common to the era, inflicting a negative modifier and population loss. Civilian casualties can be viewed in the situation screen and determine how likely the AI is to seek peace.
Sacking Cities: Every time a city or town is directly occupied, there is a 10% chance for an event to trigger resulting in the complete annihilation of the city. All buildings will be destroyed, 50% of the population will be killed, and the city will be reverted to a rural location.
Mass Conscription: All involved nations in the Thirty Years War gain a significant increase to levy recovery speed. As professionals are killed in repeat conflicts, levies take their place.
Mod Integration: This mod is designed to work well with my Dynamic Early Conquests Mod. If both mods are installed, the special protection on the HRE granted by the Dynamic Early Conquests Mod will be removed at the end of the Thirty Years War.
Peace of Westphalia:
- Default: Dynamic
- Options: Dynamic, Enforced
- Effects: If set to Dynamic, then the AI will accept/propose peace based on the number of civilian deaths, the length of the war, and how close they are to victory. If set to Enforced, then the AI will always offer and accept peace after the third phase of the war.
- Recommendation: lf you are planning to be the leader of either League, set to Dynamic.
– Alter HRE balance before or after the war
– Prevent HRE from being eaten before the Thirty Years War
– Allow the AI to coordinate better in coalition warfare
– No vanilla files have been altered, but both the Reformation and Wars of Religion Situations have been replaced. The HRE is untouched and this mod will be compatible with any HRE enhancement mods out of the box.
– Compatibility with all my other mods is already integrated
– This mod is 100% save-game compatible, provided that the Wars of Religion Situation has not started. If you install this mod into a playthrough where the situation is active, your game will CTD every time. The Reformation tweaks, however, work retroactively and will Protestant-ify Europe even if it’s been active for 70 years. Like always, save before you install any major mod mid-playthrough.
All of this mod’s balancing has been tested with my two other mods, Dynamic Early Conquests and Habsburgs and Hussites. Without these two mods, I cannot promise there will even be an HRE to have a League War in the first place. I will not address any balance issues if these mods are not active first! But all features of this mod will work standalone, should you desire it.
– Poland-Lithuania Improved Formation
– The Ottomans and the Holy League
– The Thirty Years War Revamped
– Habsburgs and Hussites
– Dynamic Early Conquests
– No Casus Belli Wars Removed
