The Type 003 aircraft carrier Fujian is China’s first flat-deck aircraft carrier equipped with Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch Systems (EMALS). With a full-load displacement of over 80,000 tons, it is a core asset for the PLAN (People’s Liberation Army Navy) to advance into far-sea defense and build a strong modern navy. Designed for far-sea surface operations, it features comprehensive capabilities in AAM, ASuW, regional deterrence and strategic deterrence. Notably, its EMALS and arrestment systems enable efficient launch and recovery of carrier-based aircraft, granting strong air and sea control capabilities as well as all-domain strike capabilities at far seas. It can form a three-dimensional offensive and defensive network for carrier battle groups and perform diverse tasks such as deterrence and AD/A2 operations. As the core command center of the formation, it boasts all-domain situational awareness, cross-platform information communication and systematic command capabilities, serving as the backbone of the PLAN’s strategic transformation and maritime power projection.
The Type 003 aircraft carrier uses conventional propulsion and a medium-voltage DC integrated power system, with a maximum endurance of over 10,000 nautical miles and speed exceeding 30 knots. It can carry 64 carrier-based aircraft, including J-15T, J-35 fighters, J-15DT electronic warfare aircraft, KJ-600 early warning aircraft, and Z-18JA/Z-18FA/Z-9D helicopters. Its EMALS, arrestment systems and three catapults greatly enhance air operation efficiency compared to Liaoning and Shandong carriers’ ski-jump and hydraulic arrestment modes.
For self-defense, it is equipped with 4 H/PJ-11 30mm CIWS, 4 HQ-10A short-range surface-to-air missile systems, an integrated acoustic countermeasure system, and 2 sets of 6-cell multi-functional launchers (capable of launching light anti-torpedo ammunition and mobile acoustic decoys). As the formation’s nerve center, it carries the H/LJG-346A large active phased array radar, new-generation shipborne electronic warfare and integrated combat command systems, with strong situational awareness and command capabilities.
Its lead ship, PLANS Fujian (hull number 18), was launched on June 17, 2022, and commissioned on November 5, 2025, as the PLAN’s largest surface combatant ever field. It serves as the carrier formation’s core command and strategic deterrence force to safeguard China’s maritime sovereignty, shipping lanes and regional stability.
