The year is 1644—a moment suspended between empires, a hinge upon which the fate of civilizations turns. In this scenario, the great powers of East Asia stand at the very edge of catastrophe. The Ming, battered and gasping; the Shun, rising like wildfire; the Qing, sharpening their blades beyond the passes; and the peripheral realms, each watching the storm gather on the horizon.
Across Europe, the General Crisis of the Seventeenth Century rages with apocalyptic force. The Thirty Years War has turned the Holy Roman Empire into a wasteland of starving armies and shattered principalities. The English Civil War pits crown against parliament, threatening to remake the isles in fire and revolution. To the east, the Commonwealth reels as the Deluge—invasions, uprisings, and devastation on an unprecedented scale.
In the New World, the Iberian conquest was a thing of the past. As Latin American silver flowed throughout the world, a new power seemed to be rising in the merchant ships of New Amsterdam and the tobacco fields of Virginia, from the cold of Quebec to the warmth of Santo Domingo. Tobacco, cigars, and furs were sweeping the world, while New Sweden was attempting to break the blockade.
The Tokugawa Shogunate was enjoying a rare period of peace after a century of civil war; Azuchi was no longer the tranquil Momoyama. Cherry blossoms were quietly blooming in the land of the gods, and the peace brought by isolation seemed to make people forget the turbulent waves of the ocean. Spring’s beauty could not be contained; a single red apricot branch reached over the wall. When the Middle Kingdom falls, can the Land of the Rising Sun remain unscathed?
The Mughal Empire had completed the unfinished work of Genghis Khan, but when the water is full, it overflows; when the moon is full, it wanes. When military power reaches its peak, will the gravity of faith lead to its decline? European ships had already arrived in India, greedily watching all of this.
The mosques of Istanbul still seemed to echo with the sounds of Rome, and the Ottoman conquests seemed endless. Christians still seemed destined to tremble under the iron hooves of the Muslims for a long time. There might be another siege of Vienna, but the arrival of a new era was unstoppable.
Everywhere, dynasties tremble, faiths fracture, and the old order fights desperately for survival as the continent spirals toward its breaking point.
