Description:

In 1066, Norman Conquest shattered England. In the winter of 1069–1070, William the Conqueror unleashed what would later be named the Harrying of the North. Survivors fled Norman rule and entered the service of the Eastern Roman Empire as Varangians.

In reward for their service, the Emperor granted them lands along the northern Black Sea coast, in Crimea, where a new society took root. There, they preserved their language, customs, and identity, blending Germanic traditions with Roman military discipline.

By 1210, only six years after the Fourth Crusade of 1204 shattered the Eastern Roman Empire into feuding successor states, pressure from steppe nomads and the total collapse of imperial protection forced the community to flee once more.

Under Æthelred the Far-Wanderer, their journey south took five brutal years, following monsoon winds and trade routes beyond the edges of the known world. In 1215, the survivors reached the southeastern coasts of Australia where they founded fortified coastal towns.
First contact with Indigenous Australians was mixed. Marked by cautious trade, cultural exchange, and violent clashes. Over time, adaptation replaced survival, and a new society emerged.
