Project Realism is an overhaul mod for Call to Arms – Gates of Hell: Ostfront with the ambition to change almost every aspect of the game. This mod (and game, and genre) is fundamentally a player-versus-player experience, tooled most especially for the Battle Zones gamemode. It is not inherently designed for conquest or any other non-PvP activity; for the bulk of the mod’s development process, we will be focusing on the PvP element. Playing wholly against a braindead AI instead of real players (and modding that, in turn) is a massive waste of time until we complete PvP mechanisms.
If you’ve never played against players, invite a friend and start learning in 1v1. If you see a lobby with 5 out of 6 players, join it so the match can get going. In a big game with 6 or more playing, nobody notices if the noob makes a mistake; all are welcome. We can show you the ropes on game nights, hosted semi-regularly, on our official discord. We are rising to the ultimate challenge of producing the pinnacle RTT experience with the most solid RTT platform in all of gaming, the modern GEM 2 Engine of Gates of Hell.
We are veterans of Men of War: Assault Squad 2 and its own beautifully powerful simulation potential. We watched mods like RobZ Realism appear and tap some of that potential very well, for a while. Yet, we always wanted more.
We already have a stable, smooth and eminently playable experience in multiplayer. The mod handles everything from 1v1 up to 8v8 on an unprecedentedly massive variety of maps and can do so without lag or crashing. If you use this mod with any other mods, we don’t expect your game to work properly. Use with other mods at your own risk and do not report any crashes or bugs to us if you accrue them with said additions!



Artillery and self-propelled guns now seamlessly project ordnance at long range. No more button toggling and mode-switching in the heat of combat to force units to behave properly; they all easily join the fray without extensive babysitting that many of us once lamented.

Tanks duel directly at ranges of 250m and beyond, with artillery and mortars getting involved from far behind the line of contact, when capable. We ensure a place for everything from welrods & shotguns at point blank, up to 203mm B-4M heavy cross-map counter-battery. Attritional deep battle from the contact line to the rear.

If you fire a Colt .45 at 45 degrees, the bullet can come down on the middle of the map and wound/kill. If you accidentally fire your PTRD-41 into the ground past that approaching halftrack, the round can bounce up off the concrete behind and nick someone across that field behind that’s hiding down in a ditch. No more comical termination distances. "An object in motion…"

A complete rework of infantry combat with focus on soldier skill and equipment. Positioning and timing is everything; support your infantry and give them a fight they can win.

A shot to the foot is not a shot to the chest, never mind the head. Headshots are absolutely lethal and only a helmet might then be the difference between life and death (as long as the cartridge is weak or fired from far away enough). No more bullet sponging. Body armor is a factor, however, as can be seen with Soviet shock and sapper troops.

You can now play as a sniper and slink from bush to bush, popping any heads you might spot behind distant brush like you always wished were possible. Fog of war has been somewhat culled because this is a living and breathing battle, not a Silent Hill game. Saving throws against sniper bullets to the face are completely removed. Anything you send down-range is sent in anger. Deterministic and real what you see is what you get combat.


More vibrant textures, improved shaders, and visual effects for a grittier, more immersive visual punch. One of the main problems we have with vanilla Gates is that units blend into a washed out grey/brown terrain, making discernment difficult. We decided early on we needed to fix this and are pleased with our results.

Returns to a more intuitive, MOWAS2-inspired user interface and unit icons for better readability and a familiar feel for veterans.

Weapon reports, impacts, and ambient sounds that attempt to capture the feeling that RobZ already managed years ago.


Many maps ported from AS2, RobZ Realism mod, and other AS2 mods ensuring proven, balanced, and fun battlegrounds for all player counts.

Historically-inspired squads and equipment to expand tactical options when we spot the opportunity, integrated seamlessly into the existing balance. The training and veterancy system has been reoriented to properly stratify infantry and their quality, from lowly conscripts and Volkssturm up to the most elite Fallschirmjäger. Emphasis always on accuracy and weapon handling and stamina over bullet-sponging.

Faction design focuses on enabling historical tools and creating practical battlefield roles for all of them, not arbitrary "doctrine" restrictions that limit creative tactics and lock off/mutual-exclusive units from one another. Entire arsenals can all take to the field simultaneously. We embrace player agency and inventiveness and try to reward exploring it. Bring the potential out of your units and their weapons, and then start combining them through your engagements for maximum effect. Your arsenal is a Swiss army knife to open up the enemy line; we give you the entire toolbox on purpose.

A ground-up overhaul of unit prices and stats to promote balanced and competitive multiplayer matches and bring out as much emergent gameplay as possible for the entire length of those matches, however brutal and attritional they can last for.
