Naples Overhaul: New Events & Decisions
A historical flavor expansion for Europa Universalis V dedicated to the Kingdom of Naples and the turbulent history of the Angevin dynasties.
The Kingdom of Naples is one of the most fascinating and contested realms of medieval and early modern Europe. Torn between rival dynasties, papal politics, and the ambitions of France and Hungary, Naples stands at the crossroads of history. This mod brings that history to life with a carefully crafted chain of dynastic events, a new situation, and over 70 flavor events covering five centuries of Neapolitan history.
At the heart of this mod lies a meticulously researched dynastic event chain that follows the House of Anjou-Durazzo from the mid-14th century to the reign of Ladislaus I of Naples. Every character is historically documented, with accurate birth dates, family relationships, and dynastic affiliations.
The chain includes:
- The marriage of Charles of Durazzo and Maria of Calabria (1345)
- The marriage of Louis of Durazzo and Margaret of Sanseverino (1343-44)
- The birth of Charles III of Naples in Cosenza (1345)
- The birth of Margaret of Durazzo in Naples (1347)
- The succession of Louis of Durazzo as Duke upon Charles’s death (1348)
- The marriage of Joan I and Louis of Taranto (1347)
- The death of Louis of Taranto (1362)
- The marriage of Charles III and Margaret of Durazzo (1369)
- The birth of Joan II of Naples in Zara (1371)
- The birth of Ladislaus I of Naples (1377)
- The adoption of Louis I of Anjou by Joan I (1380)
- The invasion of Naples and the War of Neapolitan Succession (1381)
Parallel to the Durazzo line, the mod traces the rival Valois-Anjou claimants across multiple files and namespaces:
- Birth of Louis I of Anjou, son of John II of France (1339)
- Birth of Mary of Blois, daughter of Charles of Blois (1345)
- Marriage of Louis I and Mary of Blois (1360)
- Birth of Louis II of Anjou in Toulouse (1377)
- Birth of Giovanni I of Aragon, son of Peter IV (1350)
- Birth of Yolande of Aragon (1381)
- Marriage of Louis II and Yolande of Aragon (1400)
- Birth of Louis III of Anjou in Angers (1403)
Inspired by the vanilla Hundred Years’ War situation, this mod introduces a brand new situation: The War of Neapolitan Succession.
When the Western Schism erupts and Joan I adopts Louis of Anjou as her heir, a dynastic conflict is set in motion that will determine the fate of Naples for generations. The situation features:
- Automatic CB generation for both NAP/ALB and ANJ
- Automatic war declarations when conditions are met
- Papal intervention — the Pope can side with either claimant
- Hungarian support for the House of Durazzo
- French support for the House of Valois-Anjou
- Internal revolts in both kingdoms
- Naval battles in the Mediterranean
- Peace negotiations when both sides are exhausted
Beyond the dynastic chain, this mod adds over 70 flavor events for the NAP and TWS tags, covering five centuries of Neapolitan history:
- Economic events — the Calabrian silk trade, Levantine commerce, the University of Naples
- Political events — baronial revolts, brigandage in the Mezzogiorno, succession crises
- Military events — mercenary captains, naval campaigns, condottieri
- Cultural events — artistic patronage, religious institutions, dynastic prestige
- All characters in the dynastic chain are historically documented
- The mod uses dynamic character creation — characters are generated in-game rather than hardcoded in the setup files
- Some historical compromises have been made for gameplay purposes
