Realistic Taiwan and China Relations
Want to experience an alternative 2070 starting scenario after soaking in Chinese and Taiwanese histories with this mod? Check out my new Chinese Democracy mod, designed as an expansion pack to this mod.
Tired of people asking whether Taiwan is a country? Frustrated that people can’t tell the difference between Chinese and Taiwanese? Dumbfounded that Tibetans, Uyghurs and Hong Kongers (seriously!) got better representations than Taiwanese in game? Hopefully this mod will provide a solution and a quick history lesson.
Main Feature List
- A new nation called the "Republic of Taiwan" is created with a sole claim on the Taiwan region. This is to portray the main sticking point of Taiwan independence debate (Wikipedia reference[en.wikipedia.org]).
- "Liberating Mainland China" project will give Taiwan (Republic of China) claims on Arunchal Pradesh and Mongolia regions. This is to reflect the exact words on Taiwan’s current constitution (Map reference[en.wikipedia.org]). Also adjusted the flavor text in both English and Chinese to make it clear that it is a revival of an old Chinese idea made by Chiang Kai-shek’s Kuomintang (Project National Glory[en.wikipedia.org]) instead of something native to the Taiwanese. Finally, "Liberating Mainland China" is re-translated as "光复中国大陆/光復中國大陸" per the name of the civilian committee (光復大陸設計研究委員會) setup by the Kuomintang to support Project National Glory. For extra points the updated flavor text pays homage to both Dr. Sun Yat-sen[en.wikipedia.org] and the third line of Taiwan’s current national anthem[en.wikipedia.org].
- "Liberating Mainland China" project unlock requirement has changed from Taiwan (Republic of China) must exists as an independent nation to China must exists as an independent nation. The reasoning for this change are the following:
- Fix the vanilla game bug where "Liberating Mainland China" project unlock will be lost forever if Taiwan (Republic of China) is absorbed into China, Japan or Indonesia, since it is almost impossible for China to cease to exist as an independent nation in game without using the Alien Nation. This issue is especially glaring in the 2070 scenario since Taiwan (Republic of China) starts out as being absorbed by China.
- Historically, the idea of "Liberating Mainland China" is closely related to the dispute between Chiang Kai-shek’s Kuomintang and Mao’s CCP on which political party should form the legitimate government representing China, which has nothing to do with the other debate on the legitimacy of Chinese (both PRC and RoC) ownership of the Taiwan region (See One China Policy[en.wikipedia.org] and UN Resolution 2758[en.wikipedia.org] as references). I find it hilariously missing the point that the vanilla game checks the project unlock condition against whether the Republic of China is still the government representing the Taiwan region (a.k.a. Taiwan independence debate) instead of checking on whether China still exists as a nation for the Kuomintang’s Sanmin Zhuyi[en.m.wikipedia.org] ideology to liberate it.
- The player can now play out the plausible scenario where the Republic of China is reborn due to a rebellion on mainland China without Taiwanese input.
- In the 2070 scenario, Taiwan (Republic of China)’s claim on the Taiwan region is now locked behind "Liberating Mainland China" project. I find it hilariously tone deaf to suggest that Taiwanese born after the 1990s wants independence from China just for the sake of protecting the 1947 Chinese constitution[en.wikipedia.org] and the legacy of Chiang Kai-shek[en.wikipedia.org].
- A new project called the "Honor Restored" will give Taiwan (Republic of China) almost* the same list of claims as the "Pan-Asian Combine" plus "Greater Pan-Asia" research chain. This is to reflect the fact that the Chinese irredentist ideology called "The Century of Humiliation" had a long history that goes way before the birth of People’s Republic of China in 1949 (Wikipedia reference[en.wikipedia.org]). This project will unlock after "Great Nation" and "Liberating Mainland China" are researched and Taiwan (Republic of China) still exists as an independent nation. The new project costs 40,000 research points to make the "Liberating Mainland China" plus "Honor Restored" research chain cost to be identical to the "Pan-Asian Combine" plus "Greater Pan-Asia" research chain, since it is the far-right counterpart to the far-left version of "Pan-Asian" Chinese irredentism portrayed in the vanilla game.
- The main claim differences between "Honor Restored" project and Pan-Asian research chain is that "Honor Restored" will only claim the Vladivostok region as Outer Manchuria which was lost due to the Treaty of Aigun[en.wikipedia.org], while Pan-Asian research chain will claim the entire Russian Far East regions.
- South Korea, Mongolia and Vietnam are now defined as hostile claims for both China and Taiwan (Republic of China), since those countries had violently asserted their independence from Qing and Republic of China long before Mao even finished high school.
- Both simplified and traditional character Chinese localization files are provided, with the "Republic of Taiwan" translated as "台湾国/台灣國" (Taiwan the Country), while "Honor Restored" translated as "平反国耻/平反國恥" (Overturn National Humiliation).
