La Gabelle

The Gabelle refers to the infamous French salt tax, one of the most controversial fiscal policies of pre-revolutionary France. In 1790, during the upheaval of the French Revolution, the National Assembly abolished the tax as a symbol of inequality and oppression. However, its story did not end there — in 1806, under Napoleon, the tax was reinstated, once again tying salt to state power and economic control.
