Oikoumene: Dynamic Place Names
Oikoumenē is a linguistic flavour mod for EU5. It expands dynamic location names and dynamic province names, allowing the same place to appear under different historical or culturally adapted forms during a campaign.
Current version: v0.14 – “al-Mašriq wa-l-Maġrib”
- Dynamic location names
- Dynamic province names
- Expanded personal, dynasty, and lowborn name lists with almost 9,000 name values
- Expanded ship name lists with almost 19,000 values
- 618 city flavour descriptions (English only!)
- Full support for English, Portuguese, French, German, Polish, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish versions of the game

Historical forms and established historical (not modern!) exonyms are used wherever they are available. Other names are adapted or reconstructed through the target language’s own spelling, sound system, morphology, and place-name traditions.
When a culture expands beyond its recorded historical range, the same approach is used to create forms that could plausibly have entered ordinary use over generations.
The mod is Achievements compatible since EU5 1.3.
It should work with most other mods. If another mod edits the same dynamic names, name lists, or location descriptions, load order may determine which entries appear.
- v0.15 – Persian update
- v0.16 – Indian update
- v0.17 – Southeast Asia update
- v0.18 – Steppes update
Existing languages may also be corrected or expanded between major releases.
Please report typos, broken names, missing forms, inconsistent spellings, better historical or linguistic alternatives, or cultures you would like to see covered next. Sources or short explanations are especially helpful.
This is a personal passion project. I am a linguist and a long-time Paradox player. I first discovered Paradox games around the mid-2000s, and this mod is my way of giving something back to a community whose work I have enjoyed for many years.
