Description:
Oikoumenē: Cultural Place Names

What is this?

Oikoumenē (Οἰκουμένη – Greek for the inhabited world / known world) is a cultural toponym mod.

The final goal is simple: to cover most of the map with the richest flavour a Paradox game could ever give – a map not only painted by your empire, but spelled the way your empire would prefer.

Current coverage in v0.4

Confirmed future development

  • Global coverage for major European languages (English, French, Spanish, German dialects, Turkish etc.)
  • At least Old World + some colonial coverage for other European languages (Italian dialects, West and South Slavic languages, Ukrainian and Belarusian, Hungarian and Romanian, Lithuanian etc.)
  • Old World coverage for major Eurasian languages (Persian, Mongolian, Chinese dialects, Japanese etc.)
  • Ultimate plan – full coverage for most language in their home regions and closest bordering regions.

City descriptions coming in the future!

Design goals

I tried to add linguistic flavour to the nations and cultures I personally find most interesting to play. Yet that does not mean the mod will remain limited to those few cultures from the Preview version.

The goal is to cover large regions systematically rather than adding only a few isolated names. This means that perfect historical plausibility is not always possible, especially for distant or alternate-history expansions, but I am using the best of my education, knowledge and intuition to provide the most fitting options I can.

Known limitations

This is an early v0.4 release.

Some regions are more complete than others. Some names may be revised later for spelling, historical preference, linguistic consistency or better local convention.

Compatibility

Not Ironman compatible sadly. It has to do with how EU5 calculates checksum – may change in the future (we pray).

Should be compatible with most mods. If another mod edits the same name list, load order may determine which names appear.

It should also remain compatible with future versions of the game as long as the relevant location and naming systems are not substantially changed. If Tinto adds, removes or reorganizes locations, some entries may need to be updated.

Feedback wanted

Please report:

  • typos
  • broken or missing names
  • inconsistent forms
  • better historical or linguistic alternatives
  • regions where coverage should be expanded next
  • cultures you miss the most in this mod
