Oikoumenē: Cultural Place Names
Oikoumenē is a cultural place-name and name-flavour mod for EU5.
It makes the map feel linguistically alive. Cities, regions, provinces, dynasties, and characters are named according to the cultures, languages, and empires that shape them.
Starting with v0.6 “Lyon”, the mod localises both location names and province names for all covered areas.
- cultural location names
- cultural province names
- expanded personal, dynasty, and lowborn name lists (over 8,900 name values)
- full localisation support for English, Portuguese, French, German, Polish, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish

Oikoumenē is built around one idea: conquest should not only change borders — it should change the language of the map.
Some names are historical. Others are reconstructed, adapted, or domesticated to fit the naming habits of a culture expanding beyond its usual world. The goal is not mechanical translation, but believable linguistic flavour.
This is also a personal passion project. I am a linguist and a long-time Paradox player. I first discovered Paradox games around the mid-2000s, and this mod is my way of giving something back to a community whose work I have enjoyed for many years.
- v0.10 – South Slavic languages for most of Europe
- v0.11 – Spanish and Portuguese for their global empires
- v0.12 – East Asia update
Existing languages may also be expanded at any point.
The mod should be Ironman compatible since EU5 1.3 Beta.
It should work with most other mods. If another mod edits the same name lists, load order may determine which names appear.
Please report typos, broken names, missing forms, inconsistent spellings, better historical or linguistic alternatives, or cultures you would like to see covered next.
