Description:
SHOPKEEPER REGENERATION

SHOPKEEPER REGENERATION is a lightweight Kenshi mod that allows shopkeepers to respawn after a few in-game days.

Why should I use this mod?

Shopkeepers, bartenders, and other traders in Kenshi tend to die randomly in many different situations. Sometimes it is a raid, sometimes a thief, sometimes them helping the town guards, and sometimes it is you, intentionally or not. This quickly becomes frustrating, because the shop still exists but no one is there to run it, leaving you unable to trade there ever again.

Other mods that try to fix this are sometimes outdated for the current FCS or Kenshi mechanics, or they change far too much, which can lead to incompatibilities or unstable playthroughs.

What does this mod change?

This mod only edits a single line in specific squads, setting "Regenerates" from "False" to "True".

These specific squads must meet both of the following criteria:
– They have "Is a trader" set to True, or allow the DA_TRADE effect to take place.
– They contain no unique characters (e.g. Armour King will never respawn anyway; if "Regenerates" were set to True, only the Thralls would respawn).

These specific squads include, but are not limited to:
Shopkeeper, barman, animal seller, slave trader, Shinobi Thieves, caravan trader, police chief, and bounty captain squads.

Scope

SHOPKEEPER REGENERATION does NOT change any character, faction, or world state, and does not prevent town destruction or replacement. It edits only the shopkeeper-related vanilla squads in the FCS.
If you trigger a world state change in-game, the buildings will still be replaced, and the shopkeepers will change accordingly.

This mod simply assumes that if a town has a shop, or a place to trade, someone has to run it. Leaving it unattended feels unrealistic and more like a bug than intended game design.

Help! Shopkeepers still don’t respawn!

Kenshi does not have the most reliable game engine in the world, so bugs might occur, but this is how the game is supposed to work:
– The squad leader needs to be killed for the squad to be considered "dead". Most shopkeepers and traders are the leaders of their squads in Kenshi.
– Regeneration can occur if the leader has been killed for "a few days". It is usually a week, sometimes 2-3 days, and sometimes a bit more.
– Squads spawn around the player and are linked to towns or regions. So you need to move "far enough" away to force the game to reload squads.

So if you want to force a squad to respawn, go explore for about 10 days one or two regions away from the point where the squad is supposed to spawn, then come back.

If the shopkeeper still hasn’t spawned, try again, verify that your load order matches my instructions below, and make sure that Shopkeeper Regeneration was installed BEFORE your shopkeepers were killed. Importing your save can also force the game to respawn every non-unique character in the game if needed.

More in the future?

I will not edit or add anything outside of shopkeeper respawning.
Keeping this mod lore-friendly and compatible with huge overhauls and your 400+ mod modlist is the objective.

Compatibility

Safe to install or remove mid-save.
Should be compatible with pretty much anything.
Don’t forget to import your game when adding or removing mods!

SHOPKEEPER REGENERATION should ideally be loaded after total overhauls or other mods that might set the "Regenerates" line back to "False" for shopkeeping squads.

Complete your modlist with my other mods!

All my mods are made with the intention of being highly compatible with each other!
