Better Feudalism
The feudal system in CK3 leaves a lot on the table, especially with the introduction of various advanced government types. This mod adds a bit more depth to it in a vanilla-friendly way by allowing feudal rulers to directly govern cities, expanding vassal contract clauses to have stronger effects, and introducing contract-related AI improvements. All changes apply to both the default Feudal and Sōryō government types. Currently supported game version: 1.19.*
Feudal city holdings:
- Feudal rulers can now directly govern city holdings.
- Most city holdings in feudal realms are no longer controlled by barons at game start.
- Landing feudal ruler relatives as republic barons in a feudal realm immediately converts them to feudalism.
- AI feudal rulers are now capable of revoking city holdings from their baron vassals.
Feudal Taxes & Feudal Levies:
- Obligation levels now have a higher opinion impact.
- Exempt and Extortionate obligation levels affect monthly prestige, reflecting the preferential or discriminatory treatment they represent.
- Extortionate obligations also displease all direct vassals, not just the target.
- Non-irrational AI rulers are less likely to impose Extortionate obligations on their vassals.
Special Contracts:
- Castellan and March contracts now give positive opinion and make the vassal bolder.
- Palatinate contract provides a monthly renown bonus, a significantly larger opinion boost, and makes the vassal more sociable. However, the preferential treatment displeases all powerful vassals.
- AI rulers can now negotiate mutually beneficial Special Contracts without a hook, the latter normally a requirement for AI-initiated feudal contract changes. As a result, many more Burgraves, Marquises and Palatines will appear throughout the playthrough.
Fine Print clauses:
- Granted Fortification Rights now give positive opinion with the vassal.
- Granted Coinage Rights give positive opinion and increase the vassal’s domain taxes.
- Forced Partition Succession Rights have a harsher opinion penalty.
- Sanctioned War Declaration gives a larger opinion bonus and increases the vassal’s levy reinforcement rate.
- Guaranteed Council Rights, Protected Title Revocation and Protected Religious Rights all give a larger opinion bonus.
- AI lieges and vassals prefer to spend hooks on specific Fine Print clauses based on their personality, relative power, and current realm laws. For example, greedy vassals will seek Granted Coinage Rights, and all lieges will push for Forced Partition against overly powerful subjects with non-partition succession.
Non-feudal government bonuses:
While this mod is focused on improving feudal governments, a few other government types are also slightly buffed to help them survive longer against their feudal neighbors:
- Tribal rulers gain +0.2 monthly prestige, and +20% more from Absolute Tribal Authority.
- Republic rulers gain +0.1 monthly capital development and +10% domain taxes.
- Theocratic rulers gain +0.1 monthly piety and +10% monthly lifestyle experience.
This lightweight mod can be safely added or removed anytime during an ongoing playthrough. It is designed to be compatible with Unofficial Patch by integrating any changes to the affected files.
