[WotC] XCOM: Infinity – Free Play

Free Play prevents the campaign from being forcibly terminated after completing the main storyline.

After Operation Leviathan, the original ending cinematic still plays. However, instead of proceeding to the statistics screen and credits, the Commander returns to the Avenger and the campaign continues.

The Avatar Project is reset, the Chosen return stronger than before, and Operation Leviathan may be undertaken again.

Version 1.4 — The Cycle Continues

This update expands Free Play into a repeatable post-Leviathan campaign cycle.

  • Added a persistent Free Play cycle counter
  • Added a cycle-completion alert after returning to the Avenger
  • Defeated Chosen return after Operation Leviathan
  • The Chosen gain additional strengths every cycle
  • Added paging controls for Chosen with more than six strengths
  • Operation Leviathan can be reactivated through the Shadow Chamber
  • Chosen weapons can be duplicated through repeatable research
  • Support added for compatible mod-added Chosen weapons

Detailed configuration and mod-integration instructions will be provided in a separate Steam discussion.


Main Features

  • The campaign continues after Operation Leviathan.
    The ending cinematic still plays, but the campaign does not proceed to the statistics screen or credits.

    Instead, the Commander returns to the Avenger strategy layer.

  • The Avatar Project is reset.
    All current Avatar Project progress is removed after completing Operation Leviathan.
    Alien Facilities and other Doom sources remain active, so the Avatar Project may begin progressing again.
  • A new campaign cycle begins.
    Each completion of Operation Leviathan advances the Free Play cycle counter.
    A special alert appears after the ending transition, once the Commander returns to the Avenger.
  • The Chosen return.
    Defeated Chosen have their permanent defeat flags restored after the cycle ends.
    Their existing level, strengths, weaknesses, territory, and other strategic data are retained.

    Returning Chosen are also raised to at least Raider knowledge so that their strategic activity can resume.

    Current limitation: Chosen Stronghold missions are not yet recreated.

  • The Chosen grow stronger every cycle.
    Each active Chosen gains additional strengths whenever Operation Leviathan is completed.
    The normal strength-selection system is used, including compatible strengths added by other mods.

    There is no artificial six-strength limit. The Chosen information screen gains page controls and mouse-wheel navigation when more strengths must be displayed.

  • Operation Leviathan can be repeated.
    After completing at least one cycle, a repeatable Shadow Chamber project called Return to Leviathan becomes available.
    Completing it restores the final objective and reactivates the Alien Fortress on the Geoscape.
  • Chosen weapons can be duplicated.
    Repeatable Shadow Chamber projects are added for the five standard War of the Chosen weapons:
    • Arashi
    • Katana
    • Darklance
    • Darkclaw
    • Disruptor Rifle

    Each project creates one additional copy of the selected weapon.
    By default, the process consumes an Avatar corpse and Elerium Cores.

    Compatible mod-added Chosen weapons may also be registered. Instructions are provided in the separate configuration discussion.

  • Elder Avatar corpses are recovered.
    The Elder-controlled Avatar corpses encountered during Operation Leviathan are recovered as mission loot.
    They serve both as trophies and as materials for temporal weapon duplication.
  • Regular strategic missions continue.
    Guerrilla Operations, retaliation missions, supply raids, Council missions, resistance activities, and other missions continue to generate normally.
  • There is still no normal campaign ending.
    Free Play is intended to continue indefinitely.

Installation and Save Compatibility

This mod changes the success handling of Operation Leviathan.
It must be enabled before launching the final mission.
When installing or updating the mod during an existing campaign, create a separate manual save before beginning Operation Leviathan.

Existing Free Play saves can receive missing research states automatically when loaded.

Removing this mod after completing Operation Leviathan with Free Play enabled is not recommended.

Future Development

Chosen Strongholds and Alien Rulers

Future updates are planned to recreate Chosen Stronghold missions, return the Alien Rulers, and allow their unique equipment to be acquired again.

Full Golden Path Reset

Operation Leviathan can already be repeated, but earlier Golden Path missions are not yet restored.

A future update may reset the Blacksite, Forge, Psi Gate, Network Tower, and related Shadow Chamber research.

Operation Behemoth

Break the cycle.

Operation Behemoth is planned as a new final mission capable of ending the infinite cycle and restoring access to the true campaign conclusion.

Because it would require a new tactical mission, map design, cinematics, strategy objectives, and an ending system, it may eventually be released as a separate mod.


Compatibility

  • Designed exclusively for the standard War of the Chosen campaign
  • Not compatible with vanilla XCOM 2
  • Long War of the Chosen is not supported
  • May conflict with mods that alter Operation Leviathan, the final mission success handler, the Golden Path, or
    MissionSource_Final
  • May conflict with mods that replace Chosen strategic states, Chosen strength handling,
    UIChosenInfo

    , or the Shadow Chamber research system

  • Major strategy-overhaul compatibility cannot be guaranteed
