Description:

This is a port and slight rebalance of Iridar’s Stormrider class for Long War of the Chosen; you should visit that page to find out more about all of the original abilities the Stormrider has. Check out the main class tree here[docs.google.com]. As the Stormrider is now set up for LWOTC, they have a 4-tier XCOM row as well as the pistol row (which you may actually get good use of on this class) in addition to three main ability rows (down from 4, but remember they now have the Brigadier rank and a much bigger selection of XCOM row abilities).

As of January 31st, 2021, this version of the Stormrider uses "LWS_Stormrider" as its class template name rather than just "Stormrider", and it now disables the old Stormrider class.

The Stormrider starts with the Windcaller’s Legacy, Intercept and Edge Alignment abilities at Squaddie rank, and has 3 specializations in their main ability tree.

  • Rampage is very similar to the Berserker tree in the WOTC version. Inflicting maximum damage and punishing enemies for attacking the Stormrider are what it’s all about.
  • Run Through is a mix of the classic Charger and Breaker trees, making the Stormrider very versatile with a mix of mobility skills, making multiple attacks and general utility.
  • Unyielding is a lot like the Stormrider’s old Stalwart tree, with the addition of some reaction skills. This is the tree you want if you like the idea of tanking, especially with a shield.

Other changes:
  • You won’t be able to make Stormriders through the Guerilla Tactics School, and just like in the original mod, you’ll only see them about half as often as other classes from random promotions and mission rewards. This is due to their Psionic nature. I have a balance-related reason for this decision too; with Mod Jam’s Psionics Overhaul V3 update, Stormriders have a 100% chance to be eligible for Psion training. If you think that’s pretentious, you can go into XComClassData.ini and change NumInForcedDeck to 1 to make them work like they do in the original mod, in terms of GTS Training and how common they are. If I see any comments from people reporting being unable to train Stormriders in the GTS as a "bug", I will purposely lead them on a wild goose chase for the amusement of those of us that know how to read descriptions.
  • Stormriders do not get a pistol slot by default, but they can now equip a pistol as a secondary weapon. This change was made for both balance reasons (who WOULDN’T take a pistol on a class otherwise locked to melee if the only downside is -1 mobility?), as well as animation ones. Dual-wielded melee or a melee weapon with a shield would often make pistol firing animations janky, via having the soldier hold a melee weapon AND a pistol in the same hand. If you don’t care about any of that it’s easy enough to config a pistol slot in for them.
  • Stormriders cannot equip combat knives (LW2/LWOTC ones) anymore. They don’t work with TPS or Dual Wield Melee right now anyway. You can config this change out if you’re not having that specific issue.
  • The Advent Acid Blob Launcher from A Better Barracks Arsenal can be equipped as a secondary weapon on the Stormrider. They don’t need the Launch Grenade ability to make use of this weapon after all.
  • In usual LWOTC fashion, class-specific GTS Tactics are disabled here. The abilities from them can now be acquired in the XCOM row decks.

Mod Requirements
  • In addition to the requirements listed on the side, Long War of the Chosen is required.[www.nexusmods.com] There’s very little point to using this mod without LWOTC.
  • Not a hard requirement, but I suggest grabbing Inventory Slot Weight Toggler if you plan to equip a secondary Pistol; this will prevent its SmallItemWeight from affecting your Stormrider in tactical. It will NOT prevent a Ballistic Shield’s mobility penalty, as that is not handled through SmallItemWeight, and I’m okay with this.
  • Not a hard requirement, but I suggest grabbing Mod Jam. I recently updated it with support for True Primary Secondaries and Ballistic Shields.

Conflicts
  • There should be no conflicts to speak of. Make sure you use True Primary Secondaries, and NOT the original Primary Secondaries. The original is not really compatible with LWOTC as it doesn’t play nice with single-builds. At the very least, don’t use TPS and the original together.
  • I’ve recently run into an issue with Dual Wield Melee, where the second weapon isn’t doing damage. That’s not something I can fix, don’t comment about it here. Stormrider still has plenty of options even without a second sword. Mod Jam now incorporates a fix for this via WSR thanks to Lago.

Credits
  • Iridar for making the original Stormrider Class, which of course this mod could not exist without.

If you don’t see your name in the credits and think you should be there, let me know and I’ll add you ASAP.
