Description:

People have been wanting a proper shield class for a while. Stormrider certainly can fit the part, but I wanted to design a class even more focused on shield use and protecting squadmates, so here’s the Hoplite! Check out the main class tree here.[docs.google.com]. As the Hoplite is set up for LWOTC, they have a 4-tier XCOM row as well as the pistol row in addition to their three main ability rows. They equip a pistol as their primary weapon and a shield as their secondary, and do not have a pistol slot. They no longer gain any Mobility at Squaddie, as LWOTC’s shield does not reduce Mobility.

The Hoplite starts with the Guard, Formidable and Double Time abilities at Squaddie rank, and has 3 specializations in their main ability tree.

  • Knight is all about doubling down on the Hoplite’s greatest asset: protecting squadmates from enemy attacks. This tree features a lot of skills that encourage keeping squadmates close and using One For All often.
  • Viking is your best option if you want the Hoplite to be able to be a damage dealer in melee. There are abilities that increase damage, encourage melee attacks and generally make enemies suffer.
  • SWAT is a mixed tree with abilities revolving around the use of their pistol, controlling enemies, as well as supporting the squad in ways that the Knight specialization does not.

Mod Requirements
  • In addition to the requirements listed on the side, Long War of the Chosen is required.[www.nexusmods.com] You could repurpose the Hoplite for use with regular WOTC, but that would at the minimum require the LW2 Classes and Perks mod, plus a lot of restructuring of the classdata to swap out the LWOTC versions of skills with the LW2 Classes and Perks versions. This is entirely possible to do even without ModBuddy (just config edits), so don’t ask me to do it for you. As of the May the 4th update, make sure you have LWOTC Dev Build 26 or later, as the Hoplite uses some of its new abilities.
  • While not at all a hard requirement, I highly recommend Mod Jam if you’re a LWOTC player. I recently released an update integrating Ballistic Shields and True Primary Secondaries. Hoplite is also balanced around the way Shields work in Mod Jam.
  • Ballistic Shields are a hard requirement.

Conflicts
  • There should be no conflicts to speak of.

Credits
  • Iridar for making the Stormrider, especially the Guard ability, which is the Hoplite’s focus.
  • Lago for making the Shield Rework, which motivated me to stop dragging my ass on making the Hoplite in the first place.

If you don’t see your name in the credits and think you should be there, let me know and I’ll add you ASAP.
