Description:
Summary:

The Last Merovingian

Play as the last of the Merovingians and choose whether the Merovingian Dynasty should once again rule over the Franks or be extinct forever. The Merovingian dynasty ruled territories including what is now France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Germany from the 5th to the 8th century.

Features and changes:
  • Play the last descendant of the Merovingians and start the game in the County of Rethel.
  • The ancient Kingdom of Autrasia can be formed from the start of the game.
  • Possibility to change the type of a property (Castle / City / Temple) for 300 gold pieces (via the property icon).
  • Reims is now a castle and Châtillon is now a temple.
  • The counties of Bar, Châlons, and Reims are now arable land instead of plains.
  • Two unique buildings are available in Reims (Reims Cathedral built at the start of the game) and the Merovingian Palace which can be built in Bar.
  • Frankish culture has two types of armed men at the end of the game (the Gendarmes and the Landsknecht).
  • Added several Frankish dynasty names to add diversity.
  • Change of the Merovingian coat of arms for something more sober while remaining historically consistent.[/]
    Historical context:

During the last decades of Merovingian reign, plots and assassinations will truly decimate the Merovingian dynasty.

This is when the Pippinides will take the opportunity to take power.
This period is wrongly referred to as that of the Lazy Kings. The mayors of palaces, the aristocracy, illnesses and internal Merovingian struggles will spell the end of the Merovingians, the Kings die quickly, come to power very young, and all this takes place for the benefit of the mayors of the palace who will become the Carolingians.

The last Merovingian King Childeric III was deposed in 751 by Pépin le Bref, thanks to the support of Pope Zacharie. Cropped to remove his powers by order of the Pope and imprisoned for 3 years in an abbey in Saint-Bertin, he ended up dying in 754.

However, his remains were never officially found and his son Thierry, sent to the monastery of Fontenelle, disappeared from the archives in 753.

The main idea of this mod is based on the idea (highly probable from a historical point of view) that the Merovingian line therefore survived. You are free to give back to the Merovingians what is theirs by divine right and to chastise the Carolingian usurpers or not.

PS: you start the game with Clovis who at 16 and is not married, he has little hair because he learned to shave regularly to hide from the assassins, I leave it to you to change his hairstyle as you develop;)
