Chocolate – A Different Flavor to Vanilla
What does Chocolate do?:
Chocolate is a lite overhaul mod touching many different aspects of the game. It attempts to stay close to vanilla, while making some changes to enhance aspects of the game, such as adding in events, minor mechanics and extra provinces. The feeling should be a mix between the old Beyond Typus, modern vanilla updates and my own unique flavor. It should feel less frustrating and should have more width in content.
What has been changed?:
- The map has been overhauled with new countries, provinces, cultures and more
- Overhauled areas include most of Western Europe, Eastern Europe and parts of the Middle East
- A new bookmark in 1648, after the peace of westphalia, a massive turning point in european history
- New events have been added, some historical refinements, some for balance
- Mission Trees have been updated and overhauled to improve the Fun Factor
- Development has been doubled, borrowing from Beyond Typus’s code.
- Center of Trades have been reworked with 2 additional levels
- There are over 100 new provinces, a few new monuments, lots of new countries and a lot more diverse cultures
- New Estates have been added, Peasant Republics will gain access to the Peasant Estate.
- Reformed Faith has been diversified and now has Schools of Thought similar to Islam
- First tests with allowing more nations to gain age-specific abilities.
- Minor Balance Changes
What will be done in the future:
As mentioned before, the mod is still in BETA and will slowly be updated to add in additional content.
- Current Map Setup will be refined
- More of Europe will be updated after that other areas will be reworked, such as Northern Africa
- More events, sometimes targeting historical accuracy, sometimes balance
- Slow fixes to the vanilla projection to help with realism and accurate borders.
- Lots of other enhancements
Update History:
- 2023.1 Fixes from last update + few new provinces and preparation for changes to the map projection.
- Late 2022 Updated Mission Trees, Byzantine Mission revamp start, Georgian updates
- 2021.6 Lots of changes, tons of new provinces and map changes
Peace of Westphalia:
Bookmarks have been changed in this mod to better reflect how a player might use them. Given how Paradox has given up on updating Bookmarks and most bookmarks function more as Scenarios than actual Bookmarks you might find in other Paradox games, I have removed most other bookmarks in favor of 2 solid bookmark-dates which are better maintained and work better.
With this I have added in the bookmark of 1648, the Peace of Westphalia, a turning point in Europe and the rise of what we can somewhat consider a more Modern Europe with Nations that are more easily identified. With the Peace of Westphalia things in Europe were at relative peace bar a few wars which would soon be resolved. This bookmark will allow you to play as many major nations in Europe at their prime or soon to be.
An Updated Map with Compromises
While there are great map mods out there, this mod attempts to decrease some of the accuracy in favor of reasonable compromises, while still adding in new provinces that may either be of strategic importance, help with forming proper borders or were sadly just missing in vanilla.
This is an on-going project, and for now Western Europe, Carpathia and Yugoslavia and Norhtern Europe have been polished up a bit, with updates planned for Southern Balkans and the rest of Europe.
Furthermore, besides new provinces, terrain and coastline has been reworked to be more historical. This can be seen with certain islands, be it the Channel Islands being a province, or Zeeland now being an archipelago province.
Additional Flavor
The mod contains lots of additional flavor, such as splitting up the Austrian Realms into their respective historical divisions like was done for Bavaria in 1.30. Furthermore, France has been granted a new idea set which it unlocks when going revolutionary, while its Royal Idea Set has been made more Royal.
Other changes you may encounter are the Divisions in Switzerland and the Old Zürich War that is now available.
You will also see that HRE bishoprics will now form unions with one another when they have positive opinions of eachother.
There are many other changes, like missions being updated to be more fun.
Ahead of it’s time
A proud moment for this mod is truly the fact that it was ahead of it’s time on release and will hopefully continue on this path. While the mod is a few years old now and updates have been slow, vanilla has slowly caught up to Chocolate improving and taking many of it’s ideas for itself.
