DEI Sparta Reskin
I used to have a private mod like this which I lost, and now remade it but my previous had a corinthian helmet overload, this one is a bit different.
This mod does a reskin of some spartan infantry units while keeping itself mostly loyal to the original DEI vision but also going for some historical accuracy(mainly the type of crests and colors). Considering that some units never existed and are more of a what if scenario with reforms, I felt there is leeway here to get picky about things like the helmets and so on.
The changes mainly revolve around helmets and shields, and as you can see I added Corinthian helmets on the Hipeis and some other units. Also removing some helmets that either didn’t look too good or out of place, and made it look like there was more of a transition from the first spartan hoplites to the last phase of spartan hoplites in terms of heavier and more protective helmets(culminating in more use of the revised Corinthian helmet, the one with the ear openings for better hearing).
Changes also include changes to tunics worn by the hoplites(got rid of anything italic) and removing some helmet variants that did not make sense for greeks to be using. You can get an idea of how it all looks and what I removed or added from the pictures. Also removed the robes on hoplites(not capes, robes) cause they never went to battle wearing those since it would get in the way(unless you’re just the standard bearer I guess), capes should be fine though I think.
Another thing that I bet many will be happy about is that I got rid of the shields in periokoi and other units that were all grey, so got rid of the buggy shields.
Regarding crests there’s a picture summarizing an extensive conversation I had with ChatGPT, but the gist of it is…….there is no evidence of red crests anywhere…now could the be done? sure there could be a means to get that dye, but crests were based on natural hair colors and feathers, some civilizations would go out of their way to dye them but if they were indeed dyed it’d be hard to know since they would have faded by now and revert to their natural color, the only thing you’d have is paintaings(provided they aren’t faded either) that may or may not indidicate what a soldier would have, since they could be ceremonial or just to create contrast with the vase or wall being painted).
What we do know is that the crests Spartans and other greeks had were Black, Browns, White, and a mix of these colors in the same crest for more elite units. And the crests would run from front to back for the common soldier while it would go from side to side for officers. As for feathers/plumes on the top or sides of the helmets….Spartans in particular would NEVER do this, there is no account in writing except mentioning that they did not do anything fancy like that as part of keeping the military decorum and simplicity. Now Kings, Generals and officers were known to skirt the rules(privilege of being higher rank), but they wouldn’t go to far. To that end, since it is POSSIBLE to make a red dye, I figured that if anyone would be willing to spend the money on it, it would be the Hippeis, the Royal Guard, if anyone were to have it, it would be the a General or an Officer, or a Standard Bearer. So in essence, out of tenths of thousands of people, it would only be a few hundred if at all.
(KINDA LATE BUT in case you’re new to modding, if the mod doesn’t seem to work, make sure it is at the top of the load order so that it overrides the mods below it)
