Glorious Landmarks (WHIII Campaign)
IMMORTAL EMPIRES UPDATE: Immortal Empire version of the mod can be found here I’m keeping the IE/RoC versions separate for under the hood reasons that I’ll happily complain about if asked :p I’ll be updating this as soon as an unlocker mod is available. After that this mod will probably get minimal updates as I focus on IE, but I’ll at least keep it playable.
Landmarks are a great opportunity to introduce some flavor to campaigns. They can highlight lore related to the area, open up new gameplay paths, and give you a reason to look at the regions in your empire as more than just “generic settlement #66.” I thought there was a lot of lore and design space left untouched by CA at release, hence this mod.
Adds 40+ unique landmarks for the various factions. I attempted to provide flavorful effects which are lore friendly and interesting but still balanced for a vanilla campaign. This includes things like drawbacks on some of the more powerful effects, as well as dilemmas which force you to choose between multiple boons. The goal is something like vanilla +, adding flavor and strategic depth without overhauling any vanilla systems.
The landmarks were mostly taken straight from lore books, with the exception of Cathay, for which I sometimes borrowed from actual Chinese lore (which is basically what WH does anyway…). The pictures above should give you a general sense of what you’re getting with this mod. I think discovery is half the fun, but if you want a comprehensive list of landmarks and their effects, you can find it here[docs.google.com] (please note that Steam marks all Google Doc links as potentially malicious, there’s nothing I can do about it but you’ll see the same thing on any other mod)
As someone who enjoys a challenge, one of my main concerns was that an abundance of landmarks would make things too easy for the player. To that end I added full AI support for all landmarks; the AI will build and benefit from them just as much as the player. From my testing it seems like this maintains my overall goal of making things more spicy without messing up game balance. That said, I obviously can’t test every effect in every circumstance. If you see things which you think are over/underpowered please post in the balance thread!
Compatibility This mod should be compatible with everything, it doesn’t modify any vanilla entries.
Future Plans There are a lot of ideas that I can’t implement until (1) full modding tools and (2) the release of IM. I plan on adding / reworking a lot of stuff once those are available. In addition, I’ve spoken with Hate Criminal (the owner of the Landmarks of the Old World mod for WHII) and will be importing and incorporating those landmarks once IM drops.
Finally, a huge thanks to the fine folks on the C&C Modding Discord for their testing and general support.
